It’s been six months since we locked the door on 15 East 4th Street for the last time, and far too much has happened to all of us to try to catch up here. Spreading the word about great records is what Other Music was always about, and while much has changed, we are thrilled that we can still share some of our favorite records of 2016 with you! Another sprawling and diverse rundown of records that inspired us, we hope you will find a few unheard gems in here to carry you into the new year!

Sep 23, 2016Hey Other Music family! If you are NYC-based, we’re betting you might be visiting the Brooklyn Flea Record Fair tomorrow, and if you do, along with all the other great vendors, look out for the Other Music alum table! Last night we locked the door for good on 15 E. 4th St., and for the first time in months I feel like I have a moment to think. These past few weeks have been a blur, and the last 7 day have been truly overwhelming in every way, but also some of the most beautiful and inspirational of my life. I’m a long way off from really processing the last 20 years we have spent together, but I wanted to pause and thank all of you once more for the years of support and inspiration you gave us. The outpouring of love we have felt here since we announced our closing was somewhat unexpected, and completely incredible, and confirmed for me that it was the passion and creativity of everyone in the wider Other Music family that held that place together for the last 20 years. Thank you to two decades of staff, artists, labels, distributors, and everyone — most of all to the passionate music fans who made Other Music possible. I’m not entirely sure Alex Chilton was being sincere when he wrote these words, but we are — "Thank you friends, we wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you, we’re so grateful for all the things you helped us do.” Thank you from Other Music, with deep love and gratitude. We will meet again!

As our last days fly past here, emotions are running high at Other Music, and we are truly overwhelmed by the love and support we have been feeling from all of you. We are looking forward to our blowout party at Bowery Ballroom on June 28, which will be hosted by Janeane Garofalo! It will surely be a great chance to pause and celebrate with so many of you, but with the show sold out, we need something more, and we have put together a free and open pre-party on the 28th that we think will honor this moment -- one more in-store performance as we pack our boxes and prepare to move out of 15 East 4th Street, followed by a second line parade through the East Village.
The final Other Music in-store performance will be with our good friends 75 Dollar Bill, at 5:30 on the 28th. One of our very favorite NYC bands, with a beautiful new album just out, we can't think of any better artist to bring to a close our 20-year in-store series.
And then we take our music to the streets! After the in-store, 75 Dollar Bill and the incredible Matana Roberts will lead us on a march from Other Music, across 4th Street, down the Bowery, to the Bowery Ballroom on Delancey. We want to celebrate 20 years of New York City music and arts culture with all of you, and we hope that whether or not you have tickets to the Bowery show, you will join us for this free event -- let’s show NYC that music still matters! We will start gathering at Other Music at 5:30, and the parade will begin moving at 6:30, with Matana’s crew taking the lead, and 75 Dollar Bill bringing up the rear guard after their in-store performance.

We want to thank all of you who’ve visited othermusic.com and ordered from us since we first opened our website back in 1998. As we approach Other Music’s final day of business on June 25th, we must scale back our mail-order service to just OM-related merchandise and catalog releases off the Other Music Recording Co. label. Our shipping department is currently processing all outstanding orders — for any inquiries email email@example.com.
Please note: all of of our staff’s past reviews can be found in the Other Music Update Archive going back to early 2000 and are searchable by the “artist” name — the “buy” links, however, will no longer be active.
In the meantime, if you're in New York City please stop by and see us one last time before we close our doors on Saturday, June 25th. Stay up to date with upcoming Other Music events by subscribing to our email list.

With Thursday, June 16 being the last day to order CDs and vinyl online from Other Music, we've assembled a pretty expansive Update this week, featuring a wide variety of music. Highlights include: rootsy, virtuosic rock explorations from Steve Gunn; R&B-tinged bedroom electro from Nite Jewel; 75 Dollar Bill's captivating re-imaginations of West African blues; Analog Africa's mysterious collection of otherworldly sounds and rhythms from Cabo Verde; Psychic Ills' slow-burning desert psychedelia; Lone's great new set of buoyant dance-floor jams; an excellent 2LP (with 80-page book) collection of obscure and private press jazz via the Boston Creative Jazz Scene compilation; and much, much more. Subscribe here to stay up to date with Other Music happenings and read past editions of our newsletter in the Update Archive.
