YEAR 2016, finally ENDs! Lots of trial and tribulations this year, from the political to the personal. The echoes of the summer fallout still rings in my ears. The community is still deeply missed as well as the ease of finding and sharing great music. These are musical moments pre and post OM that have served me well in my recovery. This year’s round up in grouped using the album titles from A Tribe Called Quest. Stay positive, stay proactive, progressive, and phunky! -Daniel Marcellus Givens We got it from here…thank you for your support (modern classical/jazz/experimental/soundtrack) JULIUS EASTMAN-Femenine (Frozen...

This year, I'll let the store’s Best of 2015 speak for itself, meaning I'll try not duplicate releases that made it onto that list. As a contributor to the weekly newsletter, I often try to write about things I'm into, feeling, excited about, or find interesting on some level. That said, I felt it would be a waste to simply list those same releases again, since I listened to and enjoyed much more than just what I reviewed for our Update. So, though Arca, Fingers Inc., King Midas Sound/Fennesz, Patrick Cowley, Jamie xx, Hieroglyphic Being, Knxwledge, Tomeka Reid, and others are still...

Over the last few years it seems like there is more music being made, available, reissued and compiled than I can remember. I was drawn to the new rebranding of grime into a weightless fusion of synths and sonics. New age music came back with some stellar soundscapes. R&B continued to morph with indie rock and electronica and vice versa. Detroit’s influence in techno and house deepened. African music continued to be mined, unearthing some mind-blowing jams. And everyday there was something new and interesting to check out and investigate. So yes, as usual this time of year I’m overwhelmed...

I'm feeling inspired this year by the wealth of electronic music that graced our shelves, some releases throughout the whole year, others that lasted just a few days. As usual there was lots of great music to get lost in, so I've decided to use the titles of Kraftwerk albums to help me break things down and group things together. So it's not a top 10 per se, instead I offer your imagination several lists that would make great mix-tapes, or should I say playlists. These were releases that welcomed comebacks, completely surprising, soothed a few heartbreaks, got me up-n-pumped at...

Ahh, another year has closed its doors. Throughout 2012 there were a ton of releases -- it seemed like more than ever -- with a plethora of great listening to be had. The remains of what was briefly dubbed "witch house" still lingered in the airwaves, yet took various shapes and entered new dimensions. Hip-hop seemed to have resurrected itself with a new league of MCs taking to the blogs in earnest, becoming more over the top, ridiculous, raw, dirty and adventurous than ever. Everyday seemed to offer a new mix-tape or collab-o and many openly gay MCs finally got...
